Paco Y Lola, Melbourne

Like many of the restaurants on Cecil St, Paco Y Lola offers both indoor and outdoor seating with a energetic vibe that makes it a perfect addition to South Melbourne Market. If you want something on-the-go or to take away, you can’t go past its peddler menu.

On a lazy weekend, the outdoor seating option would be the best way to unwind with a glass of Peach or Berry Sangria ($7), whilst watching the crowds pass by with their market goods.

The menu at Paco Y Lola boasts a wide range of popular Mexican street foods, including likes of quesadillas, tacos, burritos and main dishes, plus some daily specials detailed on the chalkboard outside the restaurant.

For the best variety, I recommend the tacos ($6 each) which come in 5 different varieties. The Tacos de flor de calabaza are filled with lightly battered zucchini flowers which are served with lime zest, mild-tasting fresco cheese and roasted tomatillo salsa. The combination of citrus flavours leaves a surprisingly refreshing and clean aftertaste and is an excellent precursor to some of the more richer dishes. The Pollo taco is filled with a piece of chargrilled chicken tenderloin served with salsa fresca, gremolata and crisp lettuce in a chilli vinaigrette. The combination of chilli vinaigrette and salsa fresco is delicious and gives this dish a fantastic kick.
