Baotime, Melbourne

Opened earlier this month, Baotime brings to Richmond a modern interpretation of the ‘Gua Bao’ (割包) a street food originating from Taiwan which consists of moreish fillings sandwiched inside an open, steamed bun.

At Baotime, the baos resemble more of a slider with individual top and bottom buns whilst the menu draws on flavours and inspiration from different regions in Asia (such as the Singapore Chilli Crab and Tempura Panko Prawn). Whilst the baos are the star of the menu, Baotime also offers a selection of ‘one plate wonders’ (dishes on rice).

The concept is refreshing as is the fit out – casual, modern and simple with multi-colored chairs and the interior decked out in bold street art. Whilst I look forward to some of the new menu additions, one thing I would like to see would be some more hot drinks, especially now that Melbourne is entering winter!

Baotime is currently donating $2 of each bao purchased to the UNICEF Nepal’s Earthquake Children Fund

The Baos

Tempura prawn bao – crispy, deep fried panko crusted tiger prawn ($8)

This consisted of two crispy prawns topped with siracha mayo. Overall very tasty however a little more seasoning to the panko crust would have taken this to the next level.

Captain bao – succulent braised pork belly served with crushed peanuts and Chinese pickles ($8)

This was my favourite of all the baos I tasted, the pork belly was tender and juicy with bags of flavour.

Lobster bao – moreton bay bug dressed in siracha mayo and a pineapple salad ($10)

A little messy to eat but the chunks of pineapple were a pleasant surprise and complemented the moreton bay bug perfectly.
