The Stafford Hotel – London

I’m sure I’m not the first person who’s drawn to places which have a story to tell so it so happened that not long along, I found myself immersed in the remarkable history of The Stafford. A few months back, I had the opportunity to visit their recently revamped restaurant and bar, The Game Bird, and their wine cellars to learn about the role this site played in London during the early 20th century and experience a unique wine tasting experience.

Cocktails at The Game Bird

Located on a quiet, rather handsome street behind Green Park, The Stafford is very much a symbol of classic British elegance. Although undergoing an internal revamp earlier last year, it’s retained much of the same look and feel that it’s known for, and is a perfect gateway for those seeking the quintessential English experience.

Stopping by in the early evening, I found that it was a charming place to unwind, and unpretentious despite how it might look, and a great place to enjoy their cocktails, which includes the namesake The Game Bird, a delightful medley of London No 1 Gin, honey, lemon juice and champagne.

The wine cellars

After a couple of drinks at the bar, we were taken down to one of my favourite spots in the hotel, the wine cellars. Built in the 17th century, the space was used as an air raid shelter during World War II, and today, houses an impressive collection of over 8000 old and new world wines, plus a small collection of war memorabilia which has been donated from visitors from all around the world.

At the helm of this space is Master sommelier, Gino Nardella, someone who is incredibly dedicated to his craft and his knowledge of wines is impeccable – and in addition to hosting the wine tasting, is also a great storyteller who brings all his stories to life, and is definitely someone who you would want to meet at the hotel.

Whilst the space can be reserved for private events, visitors are welcome to check out the cellars by asking the front reception – and I’d say this is one of those truly special places in London that I hope will be around for many years to come.
