Walks down the arty Greville Street often leads me to Oscar Cooper, which, occupying the prime corner of the street, is a great spot to stop by for a drink or breakfast in Prahran.
The cafe takes its name from the owners’ dogs, however its not just this unique attribute or the fact that they do serve all-day drinks that makes it a drawcard (though breakfast cocktails are always tempting!), the food is always consistently good and they serve a mean eggs benedict.
If you can’t get a table inside, sitting outside it just as lovely as its heated in winter and the umbrellas generally go up on warmer days.
Though Oscar Cooper has only been open since 2012, it already feels like the cafe has become an inseparable part of the eclectic Greville Street landscape.
Oscar’s Benedict on potato roesti, smashed avo, poached eggs, tangy hollandaise, berkshire bacon ($18)
I love seeing each cafe’s take on the classic eggs Benedict and at Oscar Cooper, the signature Benedict is no doubt one of the highlights of the menu. The avocado brings a lovely freshness to the dish whilst the potato roesti is crispy and not too starchy. A must order!
Crispy truffle polenta slice, confit field mushrooms, poached eggs, shaved manchego and jamon ($21.50)
This ranks pretty high up as one of the more inventive breakfast dishes I’ve come across, and the combination of all the elements on the dish does not disappoint. The polenta may taste a little bland on its own, but once eaten with the other components, I found that the truffle flavours worked perfectly with the nuttiness of the manchego, the salty jamon and creamy egg yolk.
