Exposed white brick walls, overhanging plants and hexagonal wall flower pots – these are just a couple of distinguishing features that you will find at one of Hawthorn’s newest residents, Short Straw. If some of these images seem familiar, that’s because Short Straw comes from the same team behind some of Melbourne’s most acclaimed cafes, including Tall Timber, Touchwood and Rustica Canteen.
Created with the mind of being a neighborhood café, the menu has been crafted by Chef Josh Clark from Young Bloods Diner in Fitzroy consisting of classic brunch fare with a slight twist. Eggs benedicts, for example, are served with ham hock and Sriracha hollandaise, whilst the classic smashed avocado is revamped with Vietnamese mint and sautéed snowpeas.
For the best way to get a taste of Short Straw’s menu, look no further than the crowd-pleaser ‘Early board’ which is comprised of a generous portion of smashed avocado on pumpkin toast, prosciutto, a mini bircher with granola with fresh berries and freshly squeezed orange juice.
Whilst Short Straw is still relatively new, its already ticking all boxes in delivering great service and an uncomplicated, diverse breakfast menu. It’s a lovely little getaway from the busy Glenferrie Road and a great spot for families with young children – yes, there’s a kids menu too!
