One event I look forward to every year is the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. It’s a fantastic way to discover new cuisines and chefs, and to delve into the local food culture of its respective cities. This year’s list was announced on 6 June, and I was thrilled to see Cape Town’s La Colombe leap from 97th to 49th place, earning the title of Best Restaurant in Africa. However, this recognition feels long overdue for a restaurant that consistently impresses (it’s been a local favourite for years) and continues to expand its portfolio.
Reflecting on my visit to Cape Town a few years ago, La Colombe remains one of my most memorable dining experiences and the same can also be said about the city itself. During my two week trip along the Garden Route and the world-class wine regions of Constantia, Franschhoek, and Stellenbosch, I didn’t encounter a single bad meal. Cape Town’s culinary scene is truly exceptional, with numerous world-class restaurants.
Whilst exploring the region requires a car and some long drives, these journeys are an integral part of the dining experience.
Left to right: One of many breathtaking drives through Cape Town, The signature Tuna “La Colombe” – a far cry from canned tuna!
The drive to La Colombe, for instance, ascends to Silvermist Organic Wine Estate, offering stunning views across Constantia. The restaurant’s seasonal menu, featuring local produce with Asian and French influences (like a Springbok Tataki), is both vibrant visually and in flavour. Signature dishes like the Tuna “La Colombe”, comprised of yellow fin tuna, a delicious umami broth, avocado puree, shiitake and sesame, stand out as highlights.
Priced at R1995 (£85 / AUD165) per person, the 10-course tasting menu is possibly the best value degustations of it’s calibre. If you’re planning a food-focused holiday, Cape Town should be at the top of your list, with a visit to La Colombe as a must.
